The Magic of Gold

There is something mystical about the reflection of light in gold, ever-changing and ephemeral.  The paintings take on a different aspect in the dim light of nighttime shining there were they are more discrete in daylight. They also change with the angle of the viewer’s perspective as one moves around the room. These reflections of gold subtly transform as the sunlight shifts in an ever changing atmosphere. It is no wonder that the Incas thought gold to be the sweat of Inti, the sun god, nor is it surprising that gold has been used to visually enhance humanity’s most revered spiritual texts and icons throughout history. Gold is said to represent the inherent light and divinity of the words giving them a shimmering allure and an oddly timeless feel.

Stardust

And what of the origins of the creation of gold? In my series “Radiance” and “Effulgence” with the marriage of gold and color I voyage in my imagination embracing the radiance of celestial bodies. Somewhere in the depths of space dense neutron stars spiral into each other in grand explosions providing the conditions for the production of gold! Yet another reminder that we are made of star dust.

“We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out – and we have only just begun.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson

“We are stardust, we are golden.”

Joni Mitchell

We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”

Paulo Coelho
